Sixty Year Cycle

Chinese philosophy recognizes five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. They are types of energy with the power to alter the nature of whatever, or whomever, they contact. Wood enhances creativity and imagination. Fire gives energy and passion. Earth adds stability, industriousness, and practicality. Metal gives strength of will to a person's character. Water promotes the qualities of sensitivity and persuasiveness.

A complete Chinese Horoscope cycle is sixty years, or five 12-year cycles. Each animal makes five appearances during the sixty years and is influenced by a different element each time. There are subtle differences in the horoscope of each animal according to which of the five cycles it occurs in.

These differences add an extra dimension to the horoscope and reveal how two individuals with the same animal sign can have different personalities.

Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang
The forces of Yin and Yang are of great importance in Chinese culture. They represent opposites found throughout nature and are complementary forces that keep nature in balance. Yang is active and is associated with day, fire, and the sun. Yin is associated with night, water, and the moon.

Notice that there is a yin spot within the yang area and there is a yang spot within the yin area. Nothing is ever entirely yin or entirely yang. One does not seek absolutes; one seeks harmony. Yin attracts Yang while Yang attracts Yin.

If you know the Yin-Yang aspect of your year of birth, you can use this knowledge to adjust your behavior to reach for a harmonious balance and avoid disharmony in your life.
