Them

by Fern and Maddie

We decided to stay with monsters in the 1950's. They are plain monsters with few tricks of the camera and generally not too sophisticated effects. They are also sort of fun to watch. Our favorite is Them.

Giant ants making this very distinctive sound are the monsters in Them. They roam the desert looking for food then fly to follow the queen to the city. They leave a few bodies behind and a leg which finally leads to their discovery.

They are the product of atomic testing in the desert: nature gone wild from radioactivity. Once in the city, they widen their range and attack a train to eat the cargo of sugar; they are seen by pilots who can't believe their eyes and finally alight in a tunnel where the queen lays her eggs. The army finds their hide-a-way and the battle begins.

Of course, the ants don't win. Monsters in the fifties rarely did.
